§ 24-1. Appointment of marshal/chief of police.

  • (a)

    The office of marshal/chief of police shall be filled by appointment of the city council. The chief of police shall receive benefits and salary as are established by the city council from time to time.

    (b)

    The chief shall be deemed to be on duty as such officer 24 hours a day every day of the term of his office. His regular duty hours shall be a 40-hour week, begin at the hours and on the days as set from time to time by the city council. The officer shall not be entitled to any compensation for overtime worked by him except as the city council may grant compensatory time off equal to overtime worked by such officer.

    (c)

    Appointment of the marshal/police chief is made on the condition that the officer will make reasonable effort to make himself available and appear and handle any police emergency at any time in the city, promptly when he becomes aware of the existence of such emergency, whether or not occurring during his regular duty hours.
